Washington: The Trump administration is actively seeking to overturn a recent court ruling that deemed its tariffs ‘unlawful,’ arguing that the decision undermines the president’s authority and critical international negotiations.

According to Anadolu Agency, the administration’s legal team has filed an appeal against the ruling issued by US District Judge Rudolph Contreras. The judge had sided with two children’s toy companies that contested the legality of the tariffs, arguing that the former president lacked the authority to impose such measures in an effort to ‘reorder the global economy.’ The decision came shortly after a separate judgment by a panel from the Court of International Trade, which also blocked the tariffs.

The Justice Department argued that by invalidating the tariffs, the court’s decision disrupts ongoing diplomatic negotiations with numerous trading partners. They contended that the tariffs serve as a credible threat essential to these negotiations. The administration claims that the district court does not have the jurisdiction to make such rulings, asserting that trade disputes fall under the exclusive purview of the Court of International Trade.
