Factbox: Deadliest Air Crashes Since 2020

Ahmedabad: At least 241 people were killed when a UK-bound Air India flight crashed in western India on Thursday. The air disaster has revived memories of recent air crashes around the globe, which have resulted in hundreds of deaths as well as losses in billions of US dollars.

According to Anadolu Agency, here is a list of the worst air crashes since 2020:

In 2025, on January 29, a Canadair CRJ-700 operated by PSA Airlines for American Airlines collided with a military Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter near Washington, DC. Both the aircraft and the helicopter crashed into the Potomac River, resulting in the deaths of all 60 passengers and four crew members on the plane, as well as three people in the helicopter. The plane had departed from Wichita, Kansas, in the US.

On June 12, 2025, a UK-bound Air India flight crashed in Ahmedabad, India, killing at least 241 people. The Boeing Flight AI171 was carrying 169 Indians, 53 UK citizens, seven from Portugal, and one from Canada, along with two pilots and 10 crew members. It crashed into a medical college hostel shortly after takeoff from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, resulting in additional casualties at the crash site.

In 2024, on August 9, a Voepass Linhas Aereas flight from Cascavel to Guarulhos in Brazil crashed in Vinhedo, Sao Paulo state, killing all 62 people on board. The ATR-72-212A flight lost control while descending and crashed into a residential area.

On December 25, 2024, an Azerbaijan Airlines plane flying from Baku to Grozny, Russia, crashed near Aktau, Kazakhstan. It was reported that weapons fire from the ground caused the crash, resulting in the deaths of 38 out of 62 passengers, including five crew members.

On December 29, 2024, a Jeju Air flight from Bangkok, Thailand, collided with an antenna array at Muan Airport, South Korea. The crash killed 179 of the 181 people on board.

In 2023, on February 13, a Yeti Airlines ATR 72 crashed near Pokhara, Nepal, killing all 72 passengers after stalling during its approach to the airport.

In 2022, on March 21, a China Eastern Airlines Boeing 737-800 crashed into a forested mountain area in Teng County, China, killing all 132 people on board. The plane suddenly lost altitude while cruising at 29,000 feet.

On May 29, 2022, a Tara Air flight crashed in a mountainous area while approaching Jomsom Airport in Nepal, resulting in the deaths of all 22 people on board.

On November 6, 2022, a Precision Air flight crashed into Lake Victoria in Tanzania after overrunning the runway. Nineteen people died, while 24 survivors were hospitalized.

In 2021, on January 9, a Sriwijaya Air Boeing 737-500 crashed into the sea after losing radar and radio contact shortly after takeoff from Jakarta, Indonesia. All 62 people on board were confirmed dead.

On July 6, 2021, an Antonov AN-26 crashed in Russia while approaching Palana in adverse weather conditions, killing all 28 people on board.

In 2020, on January 8, a Ukraine International Airlines flight was accidentally shot down by Iran, killing all 176 people aboard. The incident occurred amid heightened tensions between Iran and the US.

On May 22, 2020, a Pakistan International Airlines Airbus A320 crashed in Karachi, Pakistan, killing 97 people on board. Two passengers survived, and four people on the ground were injured. Ten days later, one of the injured succumbed to burns.
