Washington: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed his anticipation for an 'important conversation' with US President Donald Trump during the upcoming G7 summit, scheduled from June 15-17. The focus of this discussion will be advancing negotiations on a comprehensive sanctions package against Russia.

According to Anadolu Agency, Zelenskyy highlighted the significance of the Graham-Blumenthal sanctions bill, emphasizing its importance for Ukraine. He conveyed gratitude for the discussions held and support received from the US, while noting that the ultimate decision lies with President Trump. Zelenskyy is hopeful that the summit will provide clarity on the progress towards a decision, stressing the need for coordination with European Union partners.

The Ukrainian presidency has confirmed its intent to arrange a bilateral meeting between Zelenskyy and Trump during the summit. Their previous meeting occurred on April 26 at the Vatican during Pope Francis's funeral, where they discussed sanctions, air defense cooperation, and Ukraine's subsoil resources.

In early April, US Senators Lindsey Graham and Richard Blumenthal introduced a bipartisan bill proposing severe sanctions against Russia if it fails to pursue a lasting peace with Ukraine. The proposed measures include a 500% tariff on imports from countries purchasing Russian energy and other goods.

Graham has stated that the bill has sufficient support in Congress to override a potential presidential veto. Meanwhile, media reports suggest the White House is attempting to amend some provisions of the legislation. The bill is expected to be introduced in the Senate soon.
