Damascus: The US has strongly condemned the "brutal and cowardly attack" on the Mar Elias Greek Orthodox Church in Damascus, emphasizing the need for the Syrian government to bring those responsible to justice, according to State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce.

According to Anadolu Agency, Bruce stressed the importance of accountability, urging the Syrian Government to ensure the safety and security of all Syrians, including religious and ethnic minorities. The attack, which occurred on Sunday, involved an ISIS (Daesh) suicide bomber who killed at least 25 people and injured dozens more. The bomber opened fire inside the church located in eastern Damascus before detonating explosives, as reported by the Syrian Health Ministry.

In a recent development, Syria announced the arrest of all members of the ISIS cell responsible for the bombing. Bruce reiterated the United States' support for the Syrian government in its efforts to combat forces seeking to destabilize the nation and the broader region.

The US has shown its commitment to aiding Syria's government stability through the efforts of special envoy Tom Barrack. Bruce highlighted the focus on building governmental structure and stability, emphasizing the importance of a functional government framework. To facilitate this, the US lifted sanctions to allow regional nations to better assist Syria's new government in combating terror groups like ISIS. Bruce underscored a diplomatic approach over military intervention during Syria's transition.

Syria's political landscape has seen significant changes, with Bashar Assad, the country's leader for nearly 25 years, fleeing to Russia in December, ending the Baath Party's long-standing regime. Ahmad al-Sharaa, who led forces against the regime, was declared president for a transitional period in January.
