Kyiv: Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha on Monday called on the European Union and the United States to increase sanctions pressure on Russia, according to Ukraine's state-run Ukrinform news agency. Sybiha, speaking at a joint news conference in Kyiv with his German counterpart Johann Wadephul, emphasized the importance of close coordination between the two sides of the Atlantic.

According to Anadolu Agency, Sybiha expressed gratitude to Germany for its role in advancing the EU's 18th sanctions package, which he hopes will be adopted soon. He noted that these sanctions are crucial not only for supporting Ukraine but also for serving Europe's interests by cutting off resources from Russia's military efforts.

Wadephul, who arrived in Kyiv with a team of German defense industry representatives, stated that he has reached an agreement with Ukrainian officials to expand defense cooperation. This includes launching joint ventures to enhance Ukraine's domestic weapons production. Wadephul highlighted the importance of aiding Ukraine to strengthen its negotiating position.

In a related development, the European Council announced the extension of sectoral sanctions on Russia for another six months. The council's statement confirmed the renewal of EU restrictive measures in response to Russia's ongoing actions destabilizing Ukraine, extending the sanctions until January 31, 2026.
