AI Set to ‘Revolutionize’ Transport, Communications: Turkish Transport Minister

Ankara: Artificial intelligence (AI) will become even more widespread and change all aspects of life, especially in transportation and communication, the Turkish transportation minister told Anadolu. Abdulkadir Uraloglu said Trkiye's Information and Communication Technologies Authority (BTK) released a research report on AI and big data evaluating the risks and benefits of these technologies.

According to Anadolu Agency, Uraloglu highlighted that AI is emerging in various sectors, including communications, health, finance, production, transportation, agriculture, trade, education, energy, and human resources. He stated that efforts are ongoing to utilize AI at the highest level to enhance all modes of transportation, noting significant advancements in aviation with autonomous flight systems.

Uraloglu explained that Trkiye is taking important steps in AI technologies and big data utilization. He mentioned that AI is being applied in various areas such as airports, highways, tunnels, base stations, the e-Government application, and cargo. Additionally, the Automatic Train Inspection Station system will be equipped with AI to detect potential malfunctions and send early warnings to maintenance teams.

He emphasized the increasing significance of big data with the acceleration of digitalization, highlighting opportunities it presents for businesses and institutions. Big data allows for better understanding of consumer behavior, development of effective marketing strategies, and improved operational efficiency. Machine and deep learning enable the analysis of large data sets, solving complex problems, and making predictions in multiple sectors, from healthcare to finance and transportation.

Uraloglu also addressed the ethical issues surrounding the use and development of AI and big data, such as privacy, bias, accountability, and human intervention. He stated that AI and big data technologies will become even more prevalent in the future, entering all aspects of daily life.

The minister outlined six basic principles guiding their approach: developing data literacy, establishing an ethical framework, taking a human-centered approach, ensuring transparency and accountability, setting an inclusive innovation, and fostering international cooperation. He stressed the importance of data literacy for better understanding and use of these technologies, while ethical frameworks and regulatory mechanisms ensure their ethical use.

Uraloglu concluded by emphasizing the responsibility to leverage the opportunities provided by these technologies while minimizing potential risks through ethical and responsible use.
