Auckland: New Zealand on Friday established its first dedicated air force space unit, a government statement said. A launch ceremony was held at New Zealand Air Force base in Auckland, attended by Defense Minister Judith Collins and senior officials of air force.

According to Anadolu Agency, Collins emphasized the importance of space for modern life, citing its role in critical services such as weather observation and financial transactions. She noted that the launch of the air force space unit is an 'important signal' of New Zealand's commitment to space security.

Originally active during World War II, No. 62 Squadron was known for supporting Allied operations with radar technology. Now, its mission is refocused on space domain awareness, as stated by the ministry. The squadron is tasked with monitoring, analyzing, and understanding space activity to protect national and international interests.

The reactivation of No. 62 Squadron is part of the recent Defense Capability Plan, which outlines $12 billion in planned commitments to enhance the Defense Force over the next four years.
