Beijing: China on Monday urged the EU to fulfill the goals of the Paris climate change agreement, emphasizing that green cooperation is a crucial aspect of China-EU relations. "Both sides actively support low-carbon transition and green development, firmly uphold the international climate governance system," Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning stated at a news conference in Beijing.

According to Anadolu Agency, Mao Ning highlighted that the two sides "share extensive common interests and enormous cooperation space on addressing climate change," underscoring that climate change impacts all of humanity and necessitates global collaboration. She emphasized China's commitment to green development, citing joint projects like the Daya Bay Nuclear Power Station, the Thrace Wind Project in Greece, and Germany's Dollen solar park as significant milestones in China-EU green cooperation.

Mao Ning further noted that non-fossil fuels now comprise 17.9% of China's energy consumption, with a 34% reduction in carbon intensity over the past decade. Her remarks followed media reports suggesting that the EU may delay a joint climate declaration with China unless China agrees to more stringent emission reductions.

"We stand ready to work with the EU to uphold multilateralism, fulfill the goals identified in the Paris Agreement, strengthen cooperation on mitigation and adaptation, and contribute to better global climate governance," Mao added. This call for cooperation comes as the US, under President Donald Trump's administration, exited the Paris Agreement in January, with Trump asserting that the agreement unfairly disadvantaged American industries while allowing China to continue polluting.
