Russia Affirms ASEAN Partnership as Pillar of Asia-Pacific Stability

Kuala lumpur: Russia's partnership with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) is a cornerstone in ensuring stability in the Asia-Pacific region, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated. During the Russia-ASEAN foreign ministers' meeting in Kuala Lumpur, Lavrov emphasized the strength of the relationship, describing ASEAN as a 'truly reliable friend' and 'like-minded' partner. He highlighted the unity between Russia and ASEAN in their commitment to broad, equal international cooperation rooted in the principles of the UN Charter.

According to Anadolu Agency, Lavrov underscored Russia's unwavering support for ASEAN's central role in regional affairs, noting that their bilateral ties have reached a fundamentally new level. He pointed out the strengthening cooperation in politics, security, and countering new challenges and threats, alongside positive progress in economic, energy, agricultural, and humanitarian fields.

The Russian diplomat expressed confidence that the meeting would further unlock potential in the Russia-ASEAN dialogue. He also mentioned the proposed adoption of the Russia-ASEAN program document for 2026-2030, aimed at addressing current challenges and setting priority areas for cooperation.

Lavrov's visit to Kuala Lumpur is part of his attendance at ASEAN's annual ministerial events, including the East Asia Summit and the ASEAN Regional Forum on security.
