Amman: Jordan's Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi, Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani, and US Special Envoy to Syria Thomas Barrack convened in Amman for trilateral talks focused on fortifying a ceasefire in Syria's southern Suwayda province. The discussions aimed to enhance Syria's security and stability, safeguard civilians, and uphold state sovereignty and the rule of law throughout the country.

According to Anadolu Agency, the Syrian Foreign Ministry released a statement detailing the agreement on operational steps. These include stabilizing the ceasefire, deploying Syrian security forces in Suwayda, releasing detainees, advancing community reconciliation, promoting civil peace, and facilitating humanitarian aid access.

Both Safadi and Barrack acknowledged the Syrian government's pledge to hold accountable those responsible for violations against Syrian citizens in Suwayda. They expressed support for efforts to reject violence, sectarianism, and any attempts to incite discord and hatred.

The Syrian minister commended the contributions of Jordan and the US in achieving the ceasefire agreement, its implementation, and in ensuring the security and safety of Syrian citizens. The Syrian presidency had announced a comprehensive ceasefire in Suwayda following days of unrest.

Clashes erupted on July 13 between Bedouin Arab tribes and armed Druze groups in Suwayda, leading to Israeli airstrikes on Syrian military positions and infrastructure in Damascus. Israel justified its actions by citing protection for Druze communities, although most Syrian Druze leaders have rejected foreign interference, advocating for a unified Syrian state.

Following the fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime in December 2024, Israel increased its air campaign in Syria. Assad, who led Syria for nearly 25 years, fled to Russia, marking the end of the Baath Party's rule since 1963. A transitional administration led by Sharaa was established in Syria in January.
