Suwayda: The US special envoy to Syria has called for an immediate cessation of hostilities among the warring groups in Syria, urging them to commit to peace and dialogue. The appeal comes amid escalating violence in the region, which has seen clashes between Bedouin Arab tribes and armed Druze groups, as well as Israeli airstrikes on Syrian military positions in Damascus.

According to Anadolu Agency, Tom Barrack, the US special envoy, stated that President Donald Trump's decision to lift sanctions on Syria was a principled move aimed at offering the Syrian people a chance to move beyond years of suffering. Barrack emphasized that the international community supports the nascent Syrian government, watching its efforts to transition from a legacy of pain to a hopeful future.

The recent violence in Suwayda, which began on July 13, has raised concerns about the fragile ambition of Syria's new government being overshadowed by brutal acts on the ground. Barrack stressed that the responsibility for peace lies not only with the state but with all actors involved in the conflict. He urged all factions to lay down their arms and cease hostilities to ensure peace and dialogue prevail in Syria.

The envoy's statement follows a recent announcement by the Syrian presidency of a nationwide ceasefire, aimed at restoring order to the Suwayda province. Security forces have been deployed in the region, and officials have declared a halt to the clashes. This development comes after the ouster of Bashar al-Assad in December 2024 and the formation of a new transitional administration led by Ahmed al-Sharaa in January.
