Washington: US President Donald Trump announced the finalization of a "framework" trade agreement with Indonesia, which aims to eliminate 99% of the tariffs imposed on US exports to the Southeast Asian nation. This development marks a significant shift in trade relations between the two countries, with potential economic benefits for various sectors in the United States.
According to Anadolu Agency, President Trump revealed the agreement on social media, highlighting that Indonesia will open its market to American industrial, tech, and agricultural products by significantly reducing tariff barriers. The agreement stipulates that American-made products will enter Indonesia at a zero tariff rate, while Indonesian exports to the US will face a 19% tariff. Additionally, Indonesia has committed to supplying critical minerals to the US and signing substantial deals to purchase Boeing aircraft, American farm products, and energy.
A senior official from the Trump administration described the agreement as a "framework" that demonstrates the President's efforts to reset trade terms to reduce the US trade deficit through regulated imports and expanded exports. The agreement seeks to eliminate nearly all tariffs on US exports to Indonesia and address various non-tariff barriers, such as exemptions on content requirements and licensing regimes.
The official, speaking on condition of anonymity, noted that some Indonesian exports might face tariffs above the agreed 19% rate, particularly those involving third-party nations, which could incur a 40% tariff. Several provisions of the agreement are still under negotiation, including the removal of digital trade barriers and the establishment of rules to ensure the agreement's benefits are exclusive to the US and Indonesia.
President Trump's announcement arrives shortly before the August 1 deadline for nations to form new trade agreements with the US or face increased tariffs. This deadline was extended from July 9 to allow negotiators more time. Peter Navarro, the President's trade adviser, previously indicated the administration's aim to finalize "90 deals in 90 days," though this target has proven challenging. Prior to the Indonesia deal, only the UK and Vietnam had reached interim agreements with the US.
