Ankara: Iran's President Masoud Pezeshkian has declared that attempts by the US and Israel to dismantle Tehran's nuclear program are pointless, describing the notion of ending it as 'an illusion' and asserting Iran's commitment to continue uranium enrichment within international law.
According to Anadolu Agency, the president made these statements in an interview with Qatar's Al Jazeera, countering US claims, notably by President Donald Trump, that Iran's nuclear capabilities had been neutralized. Pezeshkian emphasized that Iran's nuclear expertise is entrenched in the knowledge of its scientists rather than its facilities.
The president reiterated Iran's position against developing nuclear weapons, citing its political, religious, and strategic commitments. Pezeshkian stated, 'We categorically reject possessing nuclear weapons,' highlighting that this stance is deeply rooted in Iran's values and strategic outlook.
While expressing openness to diplomatic talks, Pezeshkian insisted that any discussions must respect Iran's right to enrich uranium for peaceful purposes. He emphasized the necessity of a 'win-win logic' in negotiations.
Pezeshkian also issued a warning to Israel, indicating that Iran is prepared to respond decisively to any military aggression. 'We are fully prepared for any Israeli military action, and our forces stand ready to strike deep into the occupied territories once again,' he stated.
The backdrop to these developments includes recent hostilities between Iran and Israel, following Israel's unexpected attack on June 13, which led to a 12-day conflict targeting Iranian military, nuclear, and civilian sites. Iran responded with missile and drone attacks on Israeli military and intelligence facilities.
Iran has accused the US of being complicit in these attacks, which resulted in the deaths of Iranian military officials, nuclear scientists, and civilians. The US responded with strikes on Iranian nuclear sites, claiming significant damage.
A ceasefire brokered by the US was announced on June 23. Meanwhile, Iran is preparing for a new round of nuclear discussions with the E3 - the UK, France, and Germany - scheduled to take place on Friday in Istanbul.
