Ankara: US President Donald Trump stated on Sunday that Israel must determine its course of action in Gaza after ceasefire negotiations failed. He emphasized the urgency of hostage negotiations, highlighting that Hamas had toughened its position, and remarked, "They don't want to give them back, and so Israel is going to have to make a decision."
According to Anadolu Agency, Trump, during a press event with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, expressed his views on Israel's options without explicitly stating them. He suggested a possible deal with Hamas could be reached once the hostage numbers are reduced, noting, "Once they give them up, then they feel that that's going to be the end of them."
Trump mentioned the US's provision of $60 million for food aid to Gaza two weeks ago, expressing disappointment over the lack of acknowledgment from others. He remarked on the dire situation in Gaza, claiming that without US aid, the population would face starvation, while accusing Hamas of misappropriating aid. He insisted that the US would continue to send aid and urged other countries to contribute, stressing that the crisis in Gaza is an international concern.
Earlier, Steve Witkoff, Trump's special envoy, announced the return of the US delegation to Washington, DC, citing Hamas' lack of interest in a ceasefire. Witkoff indicated that the US would explore "alternative options" to secure hostages and stabilize the region.
Since March 2, Israel has reneged on a ceasefire and prisoner exchange deal with Hamas, maintaining the closure of Gaza's crossings and obstructing aid deliveries. Despite international calls for a ceasefire, Israel has continued its military campaign in Gaza, resulting in significant Palestinian casualties, predominantly women and children. Starvation-related deaths have escalated due to the prolonged blockade and ineffective aid management by the GHF.
In November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, citing war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Additionally, Israel is facing genocide charges at the International Court of Justice over its ongoing conflict in the enclave.
