Washington: Former Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett on Sunday expressed grave concerns over the current state of Israel, asserting that the nation is on the brink of 'collapse' and emphasizing the need for a swift replacement of Benjamin Netanyahu's government. Bennett communicated his concerns through his X account, sharing a dire report from Washington, D.C.
According to Anadolu Agency, Bennett, who held the office of Prime Minister from June 2021 to June 2022, claimed to be confronting a formidable array of accusations and a narrative of hunger purportedly promoted by Hamas and the UN. He also denounced the dissemination of what he described as fabricated images and misinformation about Israel.
Bennett criticized members of Netanyahu's coalition for making reckless statements, suggesting that their rhetoric, including threats to 'wipe out Gaza' or 'drop a nuclear bomb on Gaza,' is causing significant harm. He accused them of making such statements to garner political support from their base, which he argued is damaging the nation's interests.
Bennett further commented on the ongoing conflict in Gaza, criticizing the prolonged engagement as detrimental, stating, "Even the effort to drag out the war in Gaza, as though we had unlimited time, is causing us grave harm." He concluded with a call for urgent governmental change, advocating for a new direction for the country.
The situation in Gaza remains dire as Israel has maintained a blockade for 18 years, with all crossings closed since March 2, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis for Gaza's 2.4 million residents. According to Gaza's Health Ministry, 147 Palestinians, including 88 children, have succumbed to starvation and malnutrition since October 2023.
Despite international appeals for a ceasefire, the Israeli army has continued its offensive on Gaza since October 7, 2023, resulting in nearly 60,000 Palestinian deaths, predominantly women and children. The ongoing bombardment has devastated the enclave, leading to severe food shortages.
Additionally, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants last November for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. The nation also faces legal proceedings at the International Court of Justice concerning genocide allegations related to its operations in the enclave.
