Tel aviv: Israel's Defense Minister, Israel Katz, issued a stern warning on Monday, threatening severe military action against the Gaza Strip if the Palestinian group Hamas does not release Israeli hostages. Katz made this declaration during a ceremony in Holon, a city near Tel Aviv, where he emphasized the gravity of the situation by stating, "If Hamas does not release the hostages, the gates of hell will open in Gaza."
According to Anadolu Agency, this warning comes amidst ongoing tensions between Israel and Hamas, with the latter having proposed releasing all Israeli captives in return for the cessation of hostilities, withdrawal of Israeli troops, and the release of Palestinian prisoners. However, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has rejected these terms, advocating instead for the disarmament of Palestinian resistance factions and suggesting plans for reoccupation of the Gaza Strip.
Current estimates from Israel indicate that 58 hostages are held in Gaza, with 20 believed to be alive. Concurrently, over 10,100 Palestinians are detained in Israeli prisons, where conditions are reportedly severe, involving allegations of torture, starvation, and medical neglect. These details have been highlighted by both Palestinian and Israeli rights organizations.
The domestic situation in Israel is further complicated by criticism from opposition parties and families of the hostages, who accuse Netanyahu of prolonging the conflict to satisfy his far-right political allies and consolidate his power. Despite widespread international demands for a ceasefire, the Israeli military has maintained an aggressive campaign against Gaza since October 7, 2023, resulting in the deaths of nearly 60,000 Palestinians, predominantly women and children. This continuous assault has devastated the region and exacerbated food shortages.
Adding to the international legal challenges facing Israel, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants last November for Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister, Yoav Gallant, on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Furthermore, Israel is also contending with a genocide case at the International Court of Justice regarding its actions in the enclave.
