Tel aviv: Another Israeli soldier was found dead in his house, in an apparent suicide, local media said on Monday. The daily Yedioth Ahronoth, citing a military statement, reported that Ariel Meir Taman, a reservist soldier, was discovered dead at his home Sunday night in southern Israel.
According to Anadolu Agency, a military investigation has been initiated to determine the cause of death, with suspicions that the soldier may have taken his own life. This incident adds to a concerning trend, as recent days have seen a marked increase in suicides among Israeli soldiers, with four others reportedly ending their lives in July alone.
Haaretz figures from May indicate that a total of 42 soldiers have committed suicide since the outbreak of Israel's war in the Gaza Strip in October 2023. The conflict has resulted in significant casualties, with Israel reportedly killing nearly 60,000 Palestinians, most of whom were women and children, since October 7, 2023. The military operations have devastated the Gaza Strip, collapsing its health system and leading to severe food shortages.
Furthermore, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants last November for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, accusing them of war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice concerning its actions in the enclave.
