New delhi: The Indian government announced on Tuesday that it had neutralized the gunmen responsible for the April 22 attack at the Pahalgam tourist resort in Jammu and Kashmir. This attack led to a brief military escalation with Pakistan in May.

According to Anadolu Agency, Home Minister Amit Shah informed the parliament that the three attackers were killed during a military operation in Srinagar, the capital of Kashmir, on Monday. Shah stated, "In a joint Operation Mahadev, the Indian Army ... neutralized three terrorists who were involved in the Pahalgam terror attack," as reported by the state-run Doordarshan News. He further revealed that evidence indicated all three attackers were Pakistani nationals, citing Pakistani voter numbers for two of them and the recovery of rifles and chocolates manufactured in Pakistan.

The Indian Army confirmed on Monday that the suspected militants were killed in the Lidwas area of Harwan village, near Srinagar, in Indian-administered Kashmir. As of now, there has been no immediate response from Islamabad regarding India's claims concerning the nationality of the attackers.

The attack on Pahalgam resulted in 26 casualties, with New Delhi attributing the assault to Islamabad, an allegation Pakistan denied, calling for an impartial investigation. In retaliation, India conducted airstrikes on Pakistan, which led to a military response. Following four days of exchanged attacks, a ceasefire was announced by US President Donald Trump on May 10, which has since remained in effect.
