Washington: President Donald Trump announced that the United States and China are on the verge of finalizing a trade agreement aimed at significantly reducing import tariffs between the two nations. According to Anadolu Agency, during an interview with CNBC Trump expressed optimism about the progress being made. "We're getting very close to a deal. We're getting along with China very well," he stated. Trump emphasized the potential for a beneficial agreement, though he noted that while the deal is not crucial, he believes it is likely.

Trump downplayed the urgency of meeting Chinese President Xi Jinping, although he acknowledged their strong relationship. He mentioned the possibility of a meeting occurring before the year's end, contingent on the finalization of the trade deal. "If we don't make a deal, I'm not going to have a meeting," Trump remarked, questioning the purpose of meeting without an agreement.

Earlier in the year, Trump had announced comprehensive tariffs affecting several countries, with a standard 10% rate applied as negotiations unfolded. An August 1 deadline was set for nations to reach agreements or face increased import duties. China, in particular, was given until August 12 to secure an agreement or face tariffs exceeding 80%.

US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer indicated that the deadline might be flexible, as discussions continue. "I would say that our conversations with the Chinese have been very positive," Greer noted, highlighting ongoing talks at various levels, including between the presidents themselves.
