New york: Two anonymous victims of convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein raised concerns with a US judge about the Trump administration's request to unseal grand jury testimony, Axios reported Tuesday. Neither victim asked to keep the files sealed, but urged the court to remove any identifying information to protect their privacy.
According to Anadolu Agency, one victim expressed frustration, stating, "I am not some pawn in your political warfare," highlighting the emotional toll of the situation. The other victim questioned the priorities of the process, suggesting that 'wealthy men' seem to be the real focus rather than justice for the victims or combatting child exploitation.
One of the victims requested US District Judge Richard Berman to appoint a third party to review the documents to ensure that no victim's name or image is disclosed. Meanwhile, the other victim asked for victims' attorneys to review the redactions for privacy assurance.
The Trump administration on Tuesday requested the court rule by this Friday on unsealing grand jury exhibits. The Justice Department claimed that all but one victim mentioned in the transcripts had been notified by the government.
Epstein, who had mingled with the wealthy and powerful, including prominent politicians, pleaded guilty in 2008 to felony solicitation and procuring a person under the age of 18 for prostitution. His connection to influential figures has fueled speculation about the contents of governmental records.
Trump's MAGA allies have been advocating for the release of Epstein-related records, speculating that the files could incriminate high-profile individuals. However, many critics argue that Trump's focus on releasing only grand jury records is insufficient, as they desire the full case files with necessary redactions to protect victims' identities.
Epstein, who was awaiting trial on federal sex trafficking charges, was found dead on Aug. 10, 2019, in his cell at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in New York. His death was officially ruled a suicide.
