Beirut: Lebanon's Army Command issued a strong warning on Saturday against actions that could jeopardize national security, following online calls for protests over the government's decision to centralize control of weapons exclusively within the state.

According to Anadolu Agency, the Army's Guidance Directorate released an official statement highlighting the country's ongoing challenges, such as Israeli violations of Lebanese sovereignty and a fragile security situation. The statement emphasized that certain individuals have used social media to call for demonstrations and spread fabricated videos intended to create discord among citizens.

The army urged the public to refrain from engaging in unpredictable actions that could destabilize the nation. While the military respects peaceful expression, it will not tolerate any breaches of security, civil peace disruptions, road blockades, or attacks on public and private property.

The military also appealed to citizens and political factions to act responsibly during this challenging period, underscoring the need for unity and solidarity to overcome the dangers facing Lebanon.

The Lebanese government recently approved a plan to centralize weapon control under the state. However, Hezbollah has resisted disarming until Israel withdraws from Lebanese territory.

Israel initiated military operations in Lebanon on October 8, 2023, which escalated into a full-scale war by September 2024, causing over 4,000 deaths and approximately 17,000 injuries. A ceasefire was reached in November, but Israeli forces have continued near-daily attacks in southern Lebanon, claiming to target Hezbollah activities.

Under the ceasefire agreement, Israel was expected to withdraw completely from southern Lebanon by January 26, but the deadline was extended to February 18 due to non-compliance from Tel Aviv. Israel still holds a military presence at five border outposts.
