Syrian Foreign Minister and Chinese Ambassador Talk Bilateral Relations in Damascus

Damascus: Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani met with Chinese Ambassador Shi Hongwei to discuss the enhancement of bilateral relations between the two nations. The discussions focused on regional and international issues of mutual interest and explored ways to strengthen the ties between Syria and China across various sectors.

According to Anadolu Agency, the Chinese ambassador reiterated his country's commitment to supporting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Syrian Arab Republic and rejected any interference in Syria's internal affairs. He also highlighted the need for continued coordination and consultation between the two nations to benefit their peoples.

The meeting comes as Damascus aims to bolster its international relations and develop economic partnerships to aid in rebuilding its economy, which has been severely impacted by years of conflict. China, alongside Russia, has historically supported former Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad and played a role in obstructing UN Security Council resolutions against his regime. Assad fled to Russia in late 2024.
