Moscow: Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov engaged in a phone conversation with Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan, initiated by Yerevan, to address recent developments in Armenia-US-Azerbaijan relations and the ongoing peace process, as reported by the Russian Foreign Ministry.
According to Anadolu Agency, Mirzoyan provided Lavrov with insights into Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan's recent discussions with US President Donald Trump and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev. Lavrov emphasized the necessity of achieving lasting peace between Baku and Yerevan, adhering to the trilateral agreements established from 2020 to 2022, with Russia maintaining a pivotal role. He reiterated Moscow's willingness to continue supporting the normalization process between the neighboring countries.
The conversation between the two ministers also covered several current matters on the Russian-Armenian agenda, the ministry mentioned. In a related development, Azerbaijan and Armenia publicly shared the text of the peace agreement they had initialed the previous Friday during a trilateral summit at the White House, attended by Trump, Pashinyan, and Aliyev.
The 17-point agreement encompasses mutual border recognition, renunciation of territorial claims, commitment to non-aggression, establishment of diplomatic relations, border delimitation, and the withdrawal of mutual legal accusations. The agreement is set to be enacted once both parties complete their internal procedures and exchange ratification documents.
Earlier on the same day, Russian President Vladimir Putin affirmed Russia's readiness to aid in the normalization of Azerbaijan-Armenia relations under the existing trilateral agreements. In a phone call with Pashinyan, Putin underscored the significance of pursuing sustainable peace and discussed the unblocking of transport routes in the South Caucasus. Pashinyan briefed Putin on the outcomes of the Washington summit, while the Russian leader informed him about his discussions with US special envoy Steve Witkoff and preparations for his upcoming talks with Trump in Alaska.
