Danyor: At least seven laborers lost their lives early Monday in a landslide incident while working to restore the water supply in northern Pakistan, according to an official statement. Three additional workers were injured as they were engaged in repairing a water channel damaged by recent floods in the city of Danyor, located in the Gilgit-Baltistan region, as reported by local government spokesman Faizaullah Faraq to Anadolu.

According to Anadolu Agency, rescuers faced significant challenges and labored for hours to extract the deceased and injured individuals from the debris. The Gilgit-Baltistan area, known for its five peaks exceeding 8,000 meters, has been severely affected by rains and floods since late June. The natural disasters have resulted in 17 fatalities, with a dozen tourists, including a local TV anchor, reported missing.

On the preceding Sunday, a glacial lake outburst flood swept away a section of the Karakoram Highway, a crucial route linking Pakistan with China, and also destroyed several houses and government structures in the region. Nationwide, over 300 fatalities and more than 700 injuries have been attributed to rain-related incidents since June 26, as per the National Disaster Management Authority.

Monsoon rains typically cause widespread damage in Pakistan, but the impacts of climate change, such as melting glaciers, have exacerbated their severity and unpredictability in recent years.
