Cairo: Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty announced that Cairo is actively coordinating with Qatar and the US to reinstate a 60-day ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. "We are currently making great efforts in full cooperation with Qatar and US," Abdelatty stated during a press conference in Cairo. The objective is to return to the original plan, which includes a 60-day ceasefire, the release of captives and Palestinian prisoners, and the unimpeded entry of humanitarian and medical aid into Gaza.
According to Anadolu Agency, Egyptian media reported that a Hamas delegation has arrived in Cairo to discuss the proposal amid Israel's phased reoccupation strategy approved by its Security Cabinet. This plan involves forcing around 1 million Gaza City residents to the south, encircling the city, and launching incursions into residential areas. The second phase would focus on seizing central refugee camps, which have already experienced significant destruction during the conflict.
State-affiliated Al-Qahera News channel cited Egyptian sources indicating that efforts are being made to reconcile differences among parties to achieve a temporary truce in Gaza. The aim is to resume negotiations and make progress toward a ceasefire agreement while simultaneously working on delivering humanitarian aid to the besieged region.
Israel's public broadcaster KAN reported early Tuesday that Israeli negotiators are divided over the potential progress in talks for a prisoner swap and ceasefire agreement in Gaza. The Hamas delegation in Cairo is reportedly discussing a new initiative that proposes a comprehensive deal, which includes the release of 50 Israelis in exchange for the disarmament of the movement. Hamas has not commented on this report.
On Monday, Abdelatty expressed that Cairo, in coordination with Qatar and the US, is aiming for a comprehensive agreement to halt the Israeli war and secure a deal between Israel and the Palestinian resistance group. He emphasized the possibility of reaching a complete agreement if goodwill and political will are present, while accusing Israel of genocide in Gaza and severely limiting humanitarian aid, resulting in famine conditions.
Israel continues to face international condemnation for its actions in Gaza, with nearly 61,600 casualties reported since October 2023. The International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants last November for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Israel is also facing a genocide case at the International Court of Justice.
