Economic Sentiment in Germany Drops by 18 Points in August

Berlin: The economic sentiment index in Germany experienced a significant decline in August, dropping by 18 points to 34.7 points compared to the previous month, as reported by the ZEW institute on Tuesday. This downturn marks a notable shift in economic perceptions within the country.

According to Anadolu Agency, the assessment of the current economic situation in Germany has also seen a decline. The ZEW institute highlighted that the situation indicator for Germany now stands at minus 68.6 points, which is 9.1 points lower than the figure recorded in the previous month. This reflects growing concerns about the nation's economic health among financial market experts.

ZEW President Professor Achim Wambach attributed part of the disappointment to the recently announced EU-US trade deal. The United States and the European Union reached an agreement on July 27, introducing 15% tariffs and bringing an end to months of uncertainty in trade relations. As part of the deal, the EU committed to investing $600 billion in the US and purchasing $750 billion worth of US energy and military equipment.

The ZEW institute further noted that while initial growth estimates for the eurozone were more positive than those for Germany in the second quarter of 2025, these expectations have also been adjusted downward. The revised outlook for the monetary union currently sits at plus 25.1 points, which is a decrease of 11.0 points from the previous month's reading.
