Dublin: Irish President Michael D. Higgins described the situation in Gaza as being at the "realm of non-accountability." During an address on Saturday, Higgins spoke to RTE News, characterizing the ongoing conflict in Gaza as a "tragic period" in world history.

According to Anadolu Agency, Higgins emphasized the global community's current "extraordinary moment," highlighting concerns about certain members of the Israeli cabinet's focus on actions that disregard international law. He pointed out the proposed severance between the West Bank and Gaza as a significant threat to democratic principles, dubbing it the "realm of unaccountability."

Higgins also expressed concern over the role of technology in exacerbating these issues, suggesting that it could lead to an arms race without considering the essential distinction of humanity. He emphasized that the ongoing violence in Gaza should not distract from longstanding political issues that remain unresolved.

Furthermore, Higgins reminded that UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has the authority to invoke Chapter Seven of the UN Charter. This provision allows for enforcement actions, including the use of force, without needing Security Council approval if deemed necessary.

The conflict has resulted in significant loss of life, with reports indicating that over 62,000 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza since October 2023. The military campaign has left the region devastated and facing severe famine conditions.

Adding to the legal complexities, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants last November for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, citing war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Israel is also confronting a genocide case at the International Court of Justice related to its military actions on the enclave.
