Chisinau: Moldovan President Maia Sandu expressed concerns over her country's future, stating it remains 'stuck in the past' without integration into the European Union. She made these remarks during the 34th anniversary of Moldova's independence from the Soviet Union, celebrated with European leaders in attendance.

According to Anadolu Agency, Sandu emphasized at a joint press conference with French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk that there is no alternative to Europe for Moldova. The presence of these leaders in Chisinau was highlighted as a gesture of respect and appreciation for Moldova. Sandu underscored the country's achievements over the past four years, including securing energy security and accessing the European market.

Sandu stressed the importance of EU membership for Moldova, stating that the support of European leaders demonstrates that joining the EU is an attainable project. She expressed concerns over regional security, citing the ongoing conflict in Ukraine as a reminder of the necessity of EU integration.

The Moldovan leader identified several challenges threatening the country's sovereignty and democratic process, including interference in elections, foreign funding, disinformation, and cyberattacks. Sandu emphasized that it is up to the Moldovan people to ensure their country's continued progress towards EU membership.

The visit of Macron, Merz, and Tusk was described by the Elysee as a reaffirmation of support for Moldova's sovereignty and European aspirations. The celebrations coincided with the upcoming parliamentary election, where Sandu's Party of Action and Solidarity faces a unified opposition bloc. Last month, Sandu accused Russia of attempting to interfere in the election, a claim that Russia has denied.
