Yale University Donates $1M to Group Supporting Israeli Army: Student Coalition

New haven: Yale University has reportedly donated $1 million to the Friends of the Israel Defense Forces (FIDF), an organization that raises funds for the Israeli army, a student-led advocacy group revealed on Thursday.

According to Anadolu Agency, the Yale Endowment Justice Coalition, which advocates for ethical investment and financial transparency at the university, disclosed this donation after reviewing Yale's 2024 IRS Form 990 Schedule I. This form outlines grants issued through the university's donor-advised fund program. The coalition stated that FIDF is an American nonprofit that assists in recruiting 'lone soldiers' for Israel's activities in Palestine, including actions in Gaza.

The Yale Endowment Justice Coalition criticized Yale's donor-advised fund program, asserting that it enables wealthy donors to establish funds through the university's Office of Planned Giving. The coalition explained that Yale assumes legal control of these donations, invests them with the university endowment, and annually distributes them to qualified charities. Although donors can suggest recipients, the university retains final approval. The coalition pointed out that while other institutions, such as Notre Dame, restrict charities to those aligned with their missions, Yale appears to approve donations to organizations they claim are against education and humanity.

In response, the Endowment Justice Coalition has initiated a parallel fundraising campaign called 'Yalies for Humanity.' This campaign aims to raise $15,500 for Palestinian families in Khan Younis and southern Gaza, as well as for Health Workers 4 Palestine.

The Israeli army has continued its offensive on the Gaza Strip, resulting in the deaths of more than 65,100 Palestinians since October 2023. The ongoing military campaign has left the enclave facing severe humanitarian challenges, including famine.
