Ankara: On Sunday, Israel took the significant step of closing the main crossing between the occupied West Bank and Jordan, as confirmed by both Palestinian and Jordanian officials. The move blocks departures from the West Bank and entries from Jordan, effectively sealing the King Hussein/Allenby Bridge "in both directions."
According to Anadolu Agency, the Palestinian General Authority for Crossings and Borders released a statement advising travelers to keep an eye on official platforms for updates, as the crossing would remain closed for the day. Similarly, Jordan's Public Security Directorate issued a notice stating that passenger traffic had been suspended "from the Israeli side" and urged the public to monitor media outlets for further announcements.
The closure followed a brief reopening of the crossing earlier on Sunday. It was initially sealed on Thursday after an incident in which a Jordanian driver allegedly opened fire on Israeli soldiers at the terminal, resulting in the death of two soldiers. Jordanian authorities have indicated that an investigation into the incident is currently underway.
The recent closure recalls a similar incident in September 2024, when a Jordanian truck driver opened fire at the same crossing, killing three Israelis before being shot dead.
