North Korea’s Kim Jong Un Urges Strengthening of Naval Combat Forces

Pyongyang: North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has called for bolstering the country's naval combat force to "thoroughly" deter and counter the "enemy's provocations" as he visited the nation's first 5,000-ton destroyer, state media reported Monday. Kim's inspection of the Choe Hyon destroyer on Sunday was accompanied by key party and government officials, according to the Korean Central News Agency.

According to Anadolu Agency, the new multipurpose destroyer, unveiled in April, is part of Pyongyang's strategy to enhance its naval capabilities. During his visit, Kim emphasized that the ruling Workers' Party would persist in its efforts for the continuous expansion and growth of the naval combat force. He highlighted the navy's role in defending national rights and sovereignty, noting that its capabilities should be utilized to deter, counter, and punish perceived enemy provocations.

The Choe Hyon destroyer is armed with supersonic strategic cruise missiles, tactical ballistic missiles, and other strike systems. Notably, North Korea launched a similar 5,000-ton destroyer in June, which had previously been damaged during a failed launch attempt in May. Looking forward, North Korea aims to construct another 5,000-ton destroyer by October 10, 2026.
