Moscow: Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Tuesday advocated for the inclusion of Kabul in regional political matters during a meeting that included Afghan and regional representatives to discuss Afghanistan. According to Anadolu Agency, Lavrov emphasized the importance of Kabul's participation in political processes, multilateral associations, and joint economic endeavors for regional security and prosperity. Speaking at the seventh Moscow format consultations on Afghanistan, Lavrov reiterated Russia's support for this approach, highlighting that Moscow lifted restrictions on cooperation with Kabul after recognizing the interim Taliban administration in July. Lavrov acknowledged the Taliban's efforts in combating terrorist groups amidst external pressures and a limited budget. He also opposed the establishment of military infrastructure by external parties in Afghanistan and neighboring regions, warning of potential destabilization. Lavrov urged Western countries to amend their confrontational stan ce and take responsibility for Afghanistan's post-conflict reconstruction, including economic compensation. He also requested that humanitarian aid to Afghanistan not be tied to political conditions, citing the dire humanitarian situation affecting over half of the population. Russia, he stated, would continue to increase its humanitarian support to Afghanistan. The Taliban resumed control in August 2021 following the departure of US-led forces. Recently, China, Russia, Iran, and Pakistan opposed reestablishing military bases in Afghanistan, following a request by US President Donald Trump for the Taliban to return Bagram Air Base. The Taliban rejected the US demand, with Trump issuing a warning. Russia's recognition of the Taliban administration as Afghanistan's official government in July marked a significant diplomatic shift.
