Ankara: Over a two-day period, a total of 1,070 individuals fled El-Fasher, the capital city of North Darfur state in western Sudan, due to worsening security conditions.

According to Anadolu Agency, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported that its field teams estimated this displacement occurred on Sunday and Monday, as insecurity in the region intensified. The displaced have dispersed across various sites within the state, with the security situation remaining highly volatile and unpredictable.

On Monday, the IOM detailed that 1,510 people were displaced from El-Fasher between October 15 and 19 as a result of growing insecurity. The paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have been besieging El-Fasher since May 10, 2024. Meanwhile, the Sudanese army is attempting to break the siege of the city, which functions as the humanitarian operations center for the five Darfur states.

The conflict between the Sudanese army and the RSF commenced in April 2023, resulting in the deaths of more than 20,000 individuals and displacing 14 million, according to the UN and local authorities. Research from US universities estimates the death toll to be approximately 130,000.
