Ankara: Trkiye's Defense Ministry announced progress in negotiations with the United Kingdom concerning the acquisition of Eurofighter jets, indicating that the procurement process is expected to finalize at a suitable time.
According to Anadolu Agency, ministry sources highlighted after a weekly briefing that positive steps have been taken following discussions with the UK. They emphasized that official announcements will follow once the Eurofighter procurement reaches the contract stage. The discussions around the Eurofighter deal came into prominence during President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's visit to Qatar. The sources noted that until Trkiye's domestic KAAN fighter jet is operational, the Turkish Armed Forces will source necessary systems from allies and other relevant countries. Work on the Eurofighter procurement is ongoing, and the sources advised against taking claims beyond this seriously.
On the topic of a proposed Gaza Task Force, the ministry expressed Trkiye's readiness to participate in missions designed to maintain peace under international law. The ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza has made delivering humanitarian aid and rebuilding infrastructure priorities. A Civil-Military Coordination Center (CMCC) has been established, with plans for an International Stabilization Force (ISF) to undertake duties like conducting security patrols, protecting civilian infrastructure, delivering aid, ensuring border security, training local security forces, and monitoring ceasefires. The Turkish Armed Forces, leveraging experience from previous peace missions, are prepared for any duties assigned within the framework of international law, in coordination with relevant state institutions. As one of four guarantor countries of the ceasefire agreement, Trkiye continues diplomatic and military consultations with other states.
In addressing the situation in Syria, sources stated that the Syrian government is working on rebuilding institutions and restoring stability and security. Following a memorandum of understanding on Joint Training and Advisory Cooperation signed on Aug. 13, 2025, ongoing activities aim to enhance Syria's defense and security capacity upon the Syrian government's request. The integration of the SDF terrorist organization into the Syrian Army is deemed crucial, with Trkiye closely monitoring the process. The SDF must comply with the integration process and avoid actions that could harm Syria's political unity and territorial integrity. The stability and security of Syria are vital for regional peace, and Trkiye remains committed to cooperating with the Syrian government and supporting the principle of 'One State, One Army.'
