Ankara: Cameroon’s Interior Minister Paul Atanga Nji has announced intentions to pursue legal action against Issa Tchiroma Bakary, the main opposition leader, accusing him of inciting violence following the recent election results. Nji’s declaration comes amid heightened tensions as the nation grapples with post-election unrest.

According to Anadolu Agency, the authorities are actively collecting social media messages and videos that are considered false and disruptive to the country’s order. These materials are being used to build cases against those involved, including candidate Issa Tchiroma and his affiliates. Nji accused them of orchestrating an insurrectional plan to destabilize Cameroon, emphasizing that they would face prosecution for their actions.

The Constitutional Council announced on Monday that President Paul Biya had been reelected with 53.66% of the vote. This victory secures him an eighth term, extending his 43-year tenure as the world’s oldest sitting president.

In contrast, Tchiroma has claimed victory in the October 12 election, leading to a call for protests on Sunday. These demonstrations resulted in confrontations with security forces, leaving at least four civilians dead. Despite the unrest, Nji assured that the security situation remains under control and highlighted the conclusion of the electoral process with the official proclamation of results by the Constitutional Council.
