Washington: US Secretary of State Marco Rubio congratulated the people of Trkiye on Wednesday for the 102nd anniversary of the founding of the republic, highlighting the strength of ties and cooperation between the two NATO allies.
According to Anadolu Agency, Rubio stated that the US-Trkiye relationship is critical to global peace, security, and prosperity. He emphasized Trkiye's role as a valued NATO ally and noted the shared interests between the two nations, including regional stability, counterterrorism efforts, trade expansion, and energy cooperation.
Rubio expressed that bilateral cooperation continues to enhance safety and prosperity for Americans, Turks, and the global community. He conveyed Washington's intention to strengthen the partnership and alliance further.
Members of Congress also joined in commemorating the occasion. Representative Joe Wilson, co-chair of the Congressional Caucus on US-Trkiye Relations and Turkish Americans, along with Representative Steve Cohen, extended their congratulations to Ankara. In a post on the US social media platform X, Wilson recognized Trkiye's historic role as a bridge between continents, cultures, and global alliances while acknowledging Mustafa Kemal Ataturk as a prominent leader of the 20th century.
Wilson applauded Trkiye's involvement in the Gaza peace plan and progress in Syria, asserting that cooperation between the two NATO allies remains crucial in tackling global challenges. He also highlighted the contributions of the Turkish American community to US society, affirming that their achievements exemplify the enduring friendship between the countries and the promise of continued partnership.
Ataturk, the founder of the Turkish Republic, officially declared the nation's name on October 29, 1923, marking the country's status as a republic. Since then, Trkiye has celebrated Republic Day every October 29.
