Doha: Pakistan's President Asif Ali Zardari has proposed to "expand" defense cooperation with Qatar during a meeting with Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani in Doha. The proposal aims to enhance collaboration in defense and defense production between the two nations.

According to Anadolu Agency, the Emir responded positively to President Zardari's offer, stating that he would instruct the relevant authorities to initiate discussions immediately. This development follows Islamabad's recent defense agreement with Saudi Arabia, which Sheikh Tamim expressed satisfaction with, noting it should have occurred earlier.

Pakistan's unique position as a nation with strategic ties to China, Western countries, and Gulf nations was highlighted by Sheikh Tamim. The discussions between the leaders also emphasized enhancing collaboration in agriculture and food security and reaffirmed the historic and brotherly relations between Pakistan and Qatar.

President Zardari praised Doha's growing global influence as a center for dialogue and humanitarian diplomacy. He commended Sheikh Tamim's leadership in advocating for a ceasefire and humanitarian relief for the people of Gaza, which was achieved last month.

Additionally, Zardari welcomed Qatar's increased investment in Pakistan, expressing hope that bilateral collaboration would continue to flourish. He also lauded Qatar's role in the Doha talks on Afghanistan, as noted in a statement by his office on US social media company X. The statement added that Sheikh Tamim expressed his intention to visit Pakistan soon.

President Zardari's visit to Qatar began on Tuesday and is part of his participation in the World Social Development Conference.
