Paris: French far-right politician Marine Le Pen has announced that Jordan Bardella would be the National Rally's presidential candidate in 2027 if her conviction for the alleged misuse of European Parliament funds is upheld on appeal. Le Pen made this statement during an interview with RTL radio, highlighting Bardella's candidacy as an 'obvious' choice, despite acknowledging the difficult nature of the decision. She emphasized that this move is essential for the country's interests.

According to Anadolu Agency, Le Pen is currently appealing a prior conviction and remains resolute in defending her rights and innocence. She intends to pursue her case to the Court of Cassation if the Paris Court of Appeal confirms her sentence. Le Pen expressed that the plan is comprehensive and accounts for all possible outcomes, as a favorable ruling from the Court of Cassation could come too late for her to mount an effective presidential campaign.

Le Pen praised Bardella, noting his leadership in the National Rally's strong performance in the recent European Parliament elections. She underscored Bardella's qualities, including his willpower, conviction, and passion for the country, as fitting for presidential responsibilities. Addressing concerns about Bardella's relative inexperience, Le Pen cited historical instances where young leaders significantly influenced France's trajectory.

Le Pen is set to be retried by the Paris Court of Appeal from January 13 to February 12, 2026. Her initial sentence includes four years in prison, with two years under house arrest, a fine of £100,000 (approximately $115,822), and a five-year ban from holding public office, effective immediately. Prosecutors allege that Le Pen orchestrated a scheme to fund National Front staff using European Parliament resources from 2004 to 2016, totaling £4 million ($4.6 million). If her conviction is upheld, it would prevent her from running for the presidency in 2027, positioning Bardella as the National Rally's likely representative.
