Ankara: Trkiye has secured a place among the top 10 countries in the world for domestic patent applications in 2024, with a notable 10,004 filings. This achievement also highlights the country's leadership in the proportion of women inventors applying under the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT), as reported by the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office (Turkpatent).
According to Anadolu Agency, Trkiye has shown significant strength in patents, trademarks, and designs, as highlighted in a recent report by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). The country's patent applications increased by 18.4% in 2024, surpassing the global average. Additionally, registrations surged by 38.9% compared to the previous year, elevating Trkiye from the 12th to the 10th position globally.
China topped the list with 1.6 million patent applications, followed by the US, Japan, South Korea, and India. Other notable countries included Germany, Russia, France, and the UK. After Trkiye, Italy ranked 11th, with Iran and North Korea following.
Trkiye also made significant strides in patent applications by women, with 26.1% of the PCT applications made by women inventors, positioning the country as a global leader. The focus of Turkish patent applications was particularly strong in hydro energy technologies.
In terms of rankings, Trkiye was second in per capita increase in patent applications and seventh in domestic utility model applications over the decade from 2014 to 2024. It also ranked 10th in the number of patent experts, boasting 181 experts.
Trkiye's performance extended to trademarks, where it ranked sixth globally and second in Europe with 366,543 domestic trademark applications. The country also ranked fourth globally and first in Europe for domestic trademark registrations, with 284,781 filings.
China led globally in trademark applications, followed by the US, Russia, India, and Brazil. Following Trkiye were the UK, South Korea, and Japan.
In the realm of design, Trkiye ranked third worldwide with 41,875 domestic applications in 2024. A significant portion of these applications were for furniture and household goods, advertising, and textiles and accessories. Trkiye also ranked fourth globally in GDP to design applications and fifth in population to design applications ratios.
China was the leader in domestic design applications, followed by South Korea, Trkiye, Italy, India, and the UK.
