Seoul: South Korea's former President Yoon Suk Yeol and five former senior officials have been indicted for their roles in facilitating the ex-Defense Minister Lee Jong-sup's flight to Australia last year, a special counsel team revealed.

According to Anadolu Agency, Yoon is accused of orchestrating Lee's appointment as ambassador to Australia in November 2023 to aid him in evading an investigation into alleged interference in a military probe concerning a Marine's death earlier that year. Yoon faces charges of assisting Lee's departure, abusing his power, and violating the State Public Officials Act.

The special counsel, led by Lee Myeong-hyeon, is investigating claims that Lee fled to Australia in March last year to escape the probe. The presidential Office of National Security, the Foreign Ministry, and the Justice Ministry are suspected of coordinating Lee's appointment and his exit on Yoon's alleged instructions.

Just four days post-appointment, Lee's travel ban was lifted, enabling his flight to Australia. He returned 11 days later following mounting criticism over his departure. The other officials indicted include former National Security Adviser Cho Tae-yong, former First Vice Foreign Minister Chang Ho-jin, former Justice Minister Park Sung-jae, and two additional individuals connected to the case.

On Friday, Yoon was indicted for allegedly meddling in the military investigation into Marine Cpl. Chae Su-geun's death. Cpl. Chae drowned in July 2023 during a mission to locate flood victims in Yecheon County, having been swept away by strong currents.
