Astana: The EU emphasized the significance of a 'peaceful and prosperous' South Caucasus for enhancing connections between Europe and Central Asia during European Council President Antonio Costa's visit to Kazakhstan. Costa's discussions with Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev in Astana centered on regional stability and cooperation.

According to Anadolu Agency, Costa acknowledged Kazakhstan's "active and constructive" role, particularly its backing of the Azerbaijan-Armenia peace process. He highlighted the evolving cooperation between the EU and Central Asia, marking a 'new phase of deepening engagement.' Costa and Tokayev celebrated the 10th anniversary of their enhanced partnership and cooperation agreement, a pioneering deal for the EU with a Central Asian nation, forming a 'solid foundation' for their expanding collaboration.

Costa noted the EU's position as Kazakhstan's primary trade partner and foreign investor, underscoring Kazakhstan's role as a major supplier of oil and uranium, crucial for the EU's energy security. He emphasized tangible outcomes from their partnership, mentioning the recent launch of visa facilitation talks and Kazakhstan's pivotal role in the Trans-Caspian Corridor.

Kazakh President Tokayev described his dialogue with Costa as productive, conducted in an open and constructive manner. He affirmed the strength of Kazakhstan-EU cooperation, grounded in trust and mutual understanding, and reiterated their commitment to elevating their partnership.

Tokayev and Costa discussed strategies to enhance and diversify trade and investment ties, aiming to position Kazakhstan as a central transport hub in Eurasia. They also explored avenues for ensuring energy security and stable supplies, agreeing to broaden cooperation in areas like critical minerals, nuclear energy, petrochemicals, and renewables.
