Brussels: European Council President Antonio Costa on Monday reiterated the bloc's support for Syria, as the country marked the first anniversary of the fall of Bashar Assad's regime.

According to Anadolu Agency, Costa expressed the European Union's continued commitment to Syria through a statement on the US social media platform X. He emphasized the EU's support for a Syrian-led process focused on justice, reconciliation, and the rights of all Syrians.

Costa highlighted the EU's dedication to political dialogue, urgent humanitarian assistance, and the recovery and reconstruction of Syria. His statement comes as Syrians work towards a more stable and inclusive future following the end of Assad's nearly 25-year rule.

Assad fled to Russia last December, concluding the Baath Party's regime that had been in power since 1963. In the wake of this political shift, Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa's new transitional administration was established in January.
