New delhi: The Kremlin announced that India will keep purchasing oil from Moscow as long as it is deemed 'beneficial,' following Russian President Vladimir Putin's visit to New Delhi. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov emphasized India's sovereignty in making foreign trade decisions based on its own economic interests.

According to Anadolu Agency, Peskov responded to inquiries about India's continued energy purchases from Moscow amidst Washington's 50% tariff on Indian imports, which is partially due to India's acquisition of Russian oil during the ongoing Ukraine conflict. During his recent state visit, President Putin assured Prime Minister Narendra Modi of Moscow's commitment to providing "uninterrupted fuel supplies" to India.

India has criticized the tariff measures introduced in August, labeling them as 'unjustified and unreasonable,' while highlighting the US's continued imports of resources like uranium hexafluoride, palladium, fertilizers, and chemicals from Russia.

In terms of US relations, Peskov expressed optimism about the potential for restoring Russia-US relations by addressing existing 'irritants.' He also noted Russia's awareness of the changes in the US administration's new national security strategy document and the importance of dialogue for constructive relationships.

The strategy document, released by the US under President Donald Trump's administration, prioritizes negotiating an "expeditious" end to the prolonged Russia-Ukraine war. It outlines the US's objectives to stabilize European economies, manage relations with Russia, and support the post-war reconstruction of Ukraine, ensuring its viability as a state. The document stresses the necessity of US diplomatic efforts to restore strategic stability in Europe and reduce the risk of regional conflicts.
