German Government Plans Record $600B Borrowing for 2024 Infrastructure and Defense

Berlin: The German federal government is set to raise an unprecedented £512 billion ($600.3 billion) in 2024 through bond sales aimed at modernizing infrastructure and enhancing the armed forces, as reported by the German Finance Agency, which oversees the country's borrowing and debt management.

According to Anadolu Agency, the German Finance Agency intends to auction approximately £318 billion ($373 billion) worth of government bonds with maturities extending up to 30 years. This move marks a significant step in Germany's financial strategy, reflecting the government's commitment to long-term investments.

Furthermore, the government plans to issue green federal bonds valued between £16 billion and £19 billion ($22 billion). These environmentally focused bonds are part of Germany's ongoing efforts to support sustainable development and address climate change.

In a notable development, Germany will issue a 20-year bond for the first time next year, contributing to a planned new borrowing of £181.5 billion ($213 billion). This figure represents the second-highest borrowing in the nation's history, underscoring the government's ambitious financial agenda.

The planned borrowing for 2024 represents a record amount from the financial market, aimed at financing critical investments in infrastructure and defense. This comes after the government borrowed £500 billion ($586 billion) in 2023 to address the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The borrowing amount decreased to £439 billion ($514.5 billion) in 2024 and further to £425 billion ($498 billion) this year.

Despite maintaining its highest credit rating of AAA, Germany is expected to face increased interest costs due to the substantial borrowing levels.
