Guatemala city: Guatemala has declared three days of national mourning following a devastating bus accident that resulted in the deaths of at least 15 people and injured more than 20 others.

According to Anadolu Agency, President Bernardo Arevalo announced the mourning period on the social media platform X. He stated, “We have been coordinating all the necessary assistance actions for the affected people, while at the same time supporting those who have lost family members and loved ones.” The President further emphasized the nation’s grief by ordering flags to be flown at half-staff at government institutions and official squares, and suspending official or festive activities.

Local reports indicate that the accident occurred when a bus plunged into a ravine approximately 75 meters deep at kilometer 174 on the Inter-American Highway, which runs through Central America. The tragedy has prompted expressions of sorrow and solidarity from various officials, including National Defense Minister Brig. Gen. Henry David Saenz Ramos, who conveyed his condolences through the Guatemalan Army.

The accident has cast a somber mood over the nation, with emergency services and government agencies working to provide support and aid to those affected by the disaster.
