Washington: The US House of Representatives rejected a Democratic-led resolution on Thursday that could have prevented President Donald Trump from sending American troops to Venezuela.

According to Anadolu Agency, the war powers resolution, which aimed at preventing further military action in Venezuela, failed to obtain the majority needed for passage. The resolution was blocked by Republicans in a 215-215 tie vote, despite two Republican members joining Democrats in support of the measure.

Republicans extended a two-minute vote to over 20 minutes until Republican Rep. Wesley Hunt arrived and cast the final "no" vote, resulting in a tie and ultimately killing the measure. This move sparked an outcry from Democrats who were advocating for the resolution.

The US military recently carried out an operation ordered by Trump, resulting in the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores on January 3. They are facing drug charges in New York. Meanwhile, Venezuela's then-vice president, Delcy Rodriguez, is serving as acting president and is reported to be cooperating with the US.
