Shanghai: Chinese state media announced on Saturday that a video widely circulated, allegedly showing a major road collapse in Shanghai, was in fact generated by artificial intelligence and was false. A 49-year-old woman, known only as Luo, has been placed under administrative detention for disseminating this misinformation.
According to Anadolu Agency, the Shanghai Public Security Bureau's local branch released a notice, cited by the Global Times, accusing Luo of fabricating a story about a partial ground collapse at a metro construction site in Shanghai. The notice stated that she aimed to attract followers, resulting in an adverse social impact. The misleading video circulated on social media platforms on Thursday and Friday, alleging a collapse at the Jia-Min Line metro project construction site in Shanghai's Jiading district. It further claimed a similar risk had occurred less than four months prior.
The public security authorities confirmed the information was fake upon verification, according to the notice. Meanwhile, Shanghai Metro clarified on its WeChat account that a leakage had indeed occurred on the Jia-Min Line on Wednesday, but it was localized and resulted in no casualties. However, on Thursday afternoon, Shanghai Shentong Metro Group informed reporters of a collapse at the construction site in the same area as the earlier leakage. The site has been sealed off, and no injuries were reported. The cause of the collapse is currently under investigation.
