Munich: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Saturday highlighted the importance of 'unity' within Europe and the Euro-Atlantic community as a critical defense mechanism against Russia. During a panel discussion on the second day of the Munich Security Conference, Zelenskyy emphasized that no European nation could solely rely on its own resources for defense in the event of a full-scale conflict.
According to Anadolu Agency, Zelenskyy underscored Ukraine's investment in 'interceptors and protection' as a response to Russia's attempts to disrupt European unity. He stated, "They want to break it. Why? Because our unity is the best interceptor against Russia's aggressive plans, the best one, and we still have it. Our unity is what protects us."
Zelenskyy also stressed the necessity for 'real' and 'strong' security guarantees for both Ukraine and Europe, announcing that agreements with the US are ready for signature. He noted that these guarantees should precede any agreement to end the ongoing war, which will soon enter its fifth year.
Expressing hope that US President Donald Trump, Congress, and the American public will heed their message, Zelenskyy voiced appreciation for the 'real help' provided. He discussed ongoing peace negotiations aimed at resolving the conflict with Russia, hoping for progress in the upcoming trilateral talks set for February 17-18 in Geneva, Switzerland.
Zelenskyy expressed frustration over the differing perspectives in the negotiations, particularly pointing out Russia's frequent references to past agreements made during a summit in Alaska. He criticized the absence of Europe in the negotiations as a 'big mistake' and affirmed Ukraine's commitment to achieving a deal that ensures 'real peace' for both Ukraine and Europe.
In closing, Zelenskyy expressed confidence in ending the war with dignity, reaffirming Ukraine's dedication to making the negotiations successful.
