Damascus: Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani met with a European Union diplomatic delegation to discuss enhancing cooperation and facilitating the return of refugees to Syria, as confirmed by the country's foreign ministry.
According to Anadolu Agency, the delegation was led by Rosamaria Gili, director for the Middle East and North Africa at the European External Action Service. The discussions centered on fostering relations between Syria and the EU, with the European delegation affirming its continued support for the Syrian government's efforts.
The EU delegation also mentioned the possibility of upgrading its diplomatic representation in Damascus and the reactivation of previous agreements, indicating a gradual openness and Syria's reintegration into the international community. The return of Syrian refugees was a significant topic, with both parties emphasizing the importance of safe, orderly, and sustainable returns. A proposal to establish a joint committee to oversee the dignified return process was also discussed.
In January 2025, Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa expressed his expectation that most Syrians abroad would return within the next two years. The meeting highlighted the Syrian government's achievements over the past year, including efforts toward unifying Syrian territory, integration processes, and activating transitional justice mechanisms and asset recovery.
Discussions also covered ways to support reconstruction efforts and involve European institutions and banks in contributing to these endeavors. The political landscape in Syria has shifted significantly, with Bashar al-Assad fleeing to Russia in late 2024, marking the end of the Baath Party's long-standing control since 1963. A new transitional administration under Sharaa was established in January 2025.
