Baghdad: Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani congratulated Mojtaba Khamenei on Monday on his selection as Iran's new supreme leader. Mojtaba was declared the successor of his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed in a US-Israeli airstrike last week.

According to Anadolu Agency, Mohammed Shia al-Sudani expressed confidence in the new leadership's ability to manage the current sensitive stage and strengthen the unity of the Iranian people amidst ongoing challenges. In his statement, Sudani reaffirmed Iraq's solidarity with Iran and its commitment to supporting efforts aimed at ending conflict and opposing military operations that threaten regional stability and security.

The Iranian authorities have reported that more than 1,200 people have been killed and over 10,000 injured in US and Israeli attacks on Iran since February 28. In response, Tehran has conducted retaliatory drone and missile strikes targeting Israel, Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf countries hosting US military assets.
